Powerless Liquid Crystal Dispays

An ordinary liquid crystal display, like the one on a digital watch, uses an electrical signal to turn various crystals on the display black, creating an image. Shut off the power, and all the crystals revert to their "off" state; the display goes blank.

Datasave displays, however, use a new type of liquid crystal technology, discovered by accident during an experiment by the Liquid Crystal Institute at Kent State University. Called cholesteric liquid crystals, these crystals remain in their "on" or "off" states without a constant supply of electricity. The only time this type of display requires power is when the image on the display is changed.

Practically, this means that Datasave displays consume almost no power. Set your message and forget it! The image will remain onscreen for days, weeks, or months without a power source of any kind.

Of course, you'll want to update your messages...but since you only need power to change the image, the electricity used is practically nil. For example, a display powered by 4 AA batteries that's updated once an hour would run for six months!

Power Options

Our signs are equipped with four AA batteries in a detachable holder. Remember, even if the Datasave's batteries are completely discharged, the display will still show the last message it was programmed to display.

A standard AC power supply can be substituted for the battery pack if you intend to have the display continuously cycling different messages.
